In the dark places is where the development takes place, but we can’t see that. Darkness is cold and its lonely. It can even feel like punishment and you can’t understand what is going on.
I know there may be a lot going on in your life right now, maybe even a lot of uncertainty. But that is the time to really trust God and lean in for direction. This is where the scripture “Lean not on your own understanding, but in all His ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path” (Proverbs 3:5-6) comes into play.
Many times in my life I’ve had to lean into that verse and understand what it really meant for my life and it wasn’t easy. We are always told to have faith, and we tell it to our friends and loved ones when they are going through. We tell them to have faith and trust God. But when you are put in a position to understand what that really means for your life; it is definitely easier said than done.
It’s no longer words or a cliche it has to become REAL to you.
So I want to offer something that has helped me to endure during times of testing, trials and navigating through the dark places.
So let’s break this down into 3 parts:
- Lean not on your own understanding… That means that whatever you are thinking about your current circumstances, don’t make it foundational. Our current circumstances and feelings are fleeting and temporary. You can not build something on a foundation that is not solid. During times of darkness, you can’t see clearly and at times it can be very emotional. So what do you do? You have to put your trust in something that is solid. “On Christ the solid rock I stand, everything else is sinking sand”. I’ve seen a lot of things change in my life, but Christ has always been consistent, He is the same God today, tomorrow and forever more. His word is unchanged and unmatched and His promises are real and true.
- In all your ways acknowledge Him…Acknowledge that God is working things out for your good, it doesn’t matter what you are going through, know that He sees all and He knows all. So many times when I go through things I always feel like God has forgotten about me. During those times I have to acknowledge Him for who he is and remember what He has already done for me. I remember the times He has worked things out for me. Even when I didn’t know how it was going to work out or it seemed like it was taking too long. He was always on time and His hand was there all along. He has never left me, nor forsaken me.
- He will direct your path… He will continually lead you in the direction you should go in. It may be in the form of a phone call you receive or one you are prompted to make. It may come in the form of an idea, or from something you have read that will give you the inspiration to take action. Living a life of guided direction from God leads to a place of peace and clarity. Because during this time you allow yourself to be open and are paying attention to the promptings. No matter what way it leads you, know that He is directing your path and it will work out for your good.
If you can get out of your own way you will see that He is ever-present and always available and ready to lead and guide you.
